What Is Immersive Audio?

Immersive audio’ isn’t just a marketing term; it’s a real, new audio format that’s changing the way we experience surround sound. Until recently, sound recordings were channel-based, with mono utilizing a single channel and stereo employing two. Surround sound systems go further, with eight or more channels, including an exclusive channel for the subwoofer.

All these channel-based systems rely on predefined speaker arrangements, requiring mixers to determine which speakers to activate for each sound. But that all changes with the concept of metadata, a simple descriptor of sound location in real-time. This data, regularly updated frame by frame, can manipulate audio objects in three dimensions—length, width, and height—providing unprecedented freedom for sound to move fluidly within a space.

Dolby Atmos and DTS:X Pro embrace this approach, utilizing metadata to precisely pinpoint sound locations within a room. Now, each individual sound can move freely about the room and above viewers with upward-firing speakers.

Trinnov’s Altitude 16 and Altitude 32 processors are the only AV processors on the market that decode and render Dolby Atmos content with any 20-speaker system. The Altitude can support any speaker layout, meaning Dolby Atmos immersive audio works on whatever setup you have.

What Is WaveForming?

Six years in the making, WaveForming sets a new standard in low-frequency sound reproduction. Within Trinnov processors, the WaveForming™ technology introduces a new algorithm and design principles to reimagine the bass experience without room-induced distortions.

To reduce room reflections, WaveForming addresses the problem at the source. The system amalgamates multiple audio sources into a single acoustic source. This unified acoustical source generates a tailored wavefront through Wavefront Synthesis, directing bass toward the listening area while diverting it away from highly reflective surfaces—thus reducing the level of reflections in the room.

WaveForming shifts the performance focus from frequency to decay time, reducing it down to 20Hz. WaveForming enhances bass clarity, impact, and definition and ensures seat-to-seat consistency by eliminating low-frequency room modes. Rumbling, low bass sounds have never sounded better than with WaveForming technology.

What Does This Mean for My Home Theater?

When your surround sound system is equipped with immersive audio, you’ll become completely enveloped in the stories on screen. Whether there’s a medieval army riding across a field or a race car whizzing around the tracks, you’ll hear the action moving through the room as it would sound in real life.

Coupled with WaveForming technology, you’ll enjoy cleaner bass sounds with less delay. Even the subtlest amount of delay can overwhelm a room with low frequencies, but WaveForming provides a punchier, more precise sound.
